The Armed Forces of Belarus have begun the formation of the 37th separate airborne assault brigade, which will be deployed in the Gomel region, approximately 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The announcement was made on August 2 by the commander of the Belarusian Special Operations Forces, Aleksandr Ilyukevich, in an intervention on the “VoenTV” television channel, IPN reports.

Aleksandr Ilyukevich claims that one airborne assault battalion is already fully formed, and by the end of the year it is planned to create a second one. The brigade will include combat support, artillery, air defense, reconnaissance and logistics subunits. According to him, the officer corps of the new unit is already completed.

“Novaya Gazeta Europa” states, however, that the actual state of readiness of the unit is not clear from the official statement, and the deployment is planned only for next year.

Ilyukevich said that the decision to create the brigade is related to the way the armed conflict in Ukraine is unfolding and the increasingly intense use of drones on the battlefield.
