PLDM supports candidate Ion Sturza

The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) supports the candidate for Prime Minister Ion Sturza, the party’s acting chairman Valeriu Strelet announced after the December 22 meeting with the candidate fielded by the head of state.

Valeriu Strelet noted that Ion Sturza meets the profile set by the PLDM’s National Political Council, which pleads for appointing an apolitical person as Premier. In the immediate period, the party will delegate persons to submit suggestions for the government program of the future Cabinet.

The PLDM denies the speculations that by nominating Sturza, the head of state played a game in concert with the Lib-Dems. As regards the candidate’s chances of obtaining the Parliament’s vote of confidence, Strelet said everything depends on Sturza’s performance and activism and if he manages to convince the MPs that his views deserve to be supported.

After the meeting, Ion Sturza said the Government he will form will include members of the interim Cabinet. A technocratic Government does not exclude the participation of political figures, on condition that the persons suspend party work during their term.

Sturza said he is confident that he will find the necessary support in Parliament. He voiced hope that the PDM will accept to have a meeting with him, regardless of the decision about their vote in Parliament. He is to have a meeting with representatives of civil society and will also contact the Liberal Party and the Leanca group for having a meeting with them.

The leaders of the Party of Socialists and the Democratic Party said they will not vote for a Sturza Government. The 14 MPs who left the Party of Communists said they will not meet with the candidate to discuss with him either. The Leanca group is waiting for an invitation to discussions, while the Liberals haven’t stated their position yet.

Ceadir-Lunga launches third municipal bond issue to raise 8 million lei

The Ceadir-Lunga city hall has launched the third municipal bond issue, aiming to raise 8 million lei for local development projects. The funds will be used to modernize water and sewage networks, as well as to rehabilitate road infrastructure, IPN reports.

During the launch event, the mayor of Ceadir-Lunga, Anatoli Topal, stated that one of the main objectives of the local administration is to create better conditions for the development of the business environment and stimulate the creation of new jobs.

According to the mayor, the money raised through this issue will be invested in infrastructure for entrepreneurship, the modernization of the drinking water supply system and the rehabilitation of local roads. Among the planned projects is the commissioning of the water treatment plant, built about 20 years ago.

The executive director of the independent analytical center “Expert-Grup”, Adrian Lupusor, mentioned that the new bond issue confirms the confidence in this financing mechanism and demonstrates the credibility of the local administration as an issuer, after the success of the first two issues carried out by Ceadir-Lunga.

The Senior Economic Counselor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Republic of Moldova, Valerian Moraru, emphasized that the previous experience with municipal bonds has demonstrated the viability of this instrument, through the implementation of concrete projects and the observance of commitments to investors. The Embassy will continue to support the development of this mechanism and encourages other local authorities to use it.

The bond subscription period runs from August 3 to 17, and the nominal value of a bond is 1,000 lei.

Romanian soldiers detonated the Parjoaia rock on the Danube on Monday, using 100 kilograms of explosives, to redirect a greater flow of water to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. The intervention takes place in the context of the historic drop in the Danube level, which is putting pressure on the plant’s cooling system, IPN reports.

According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, the controlled explosion removed the rock, and in the coming period, dredging works and the installation of barges on the Bala branch will continue, to direct the water to the Old Danube, from where the power plant’s cooling system is supplied.

The intervention takes place in the context in which the flow of the Danube at the entrance to Romania is forecast to decrease in the coming days to approximately 1,400 cubic meters per second, a level close to the historical minimum recorded in 1985 and almost three times lower than the multiannual average for August.

Due to the reduced flow, the plant’s reactor 1 has been shut down for almost a week, and authorities warn that if the situation does not improve, the operation of reactor 2 could also be affected.

The Romanian government has declared a state of alert for August due to a drop in energy production due to drought and low Danube flows. The government has allocated funds for hydrotechnical works in the Cernavoda area and has called for a voluntary reduction in energy consumption during peak hours.
