Suspended prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo will be also investigated for unjust enrichment and money laundering that he allegedly committed in 2014-2015. The Superior Council of Prosecutors entrusted the designated prosecutor Victor Furtuna with the task of investigating the given offenses.

Contacted by IPN for details, Mariana Cherpec, press officer of the Prosecutor General’s Office, said Victor Furtuna was empowered to probe the newly identified circumstances and to decide if there are reasonable suspicions about the commission of the aforementioned offenses.

Depending on the resuts of the investigation, within 30 days Victor Furtuna will decide whether to take legal action or not.

Alexandr Stoianoglo was arrested last October and was subsequently placed under house arrest on charges of abuse of office, bribery, perjury, and facilitation of an organized criminal group. The investigation into abuse of office was completed. The suspended prosecutor general denies any wrongdoing.

At end-May, the Superior Council of Prosecutors proposed that President Maia Sandu should fire Alexandr Stoianoglo from the post of prosecutor general from which he was suspended. The Council took such a decision after familiarizing itself with the report of the expert commission that assessed Stoianoglo’s performance as “unsatisfactory”. President Sandu hasn’t yet taken a decision. At the start of June, the European Court of Human Rights communicated the two complaints filed by Alexandr Stoianoglo to the Government of the Republic of Moldova as a matter of urgency.

The City Hall of Chisinau is prepared to ensure the city’s water supply even in the event of potential difficulties related to the flow of the Dniester River. The statement was made by the general mayor, Ion Ceban, who specified that the municipality has established backup measures and has logistical resources for intervention, if the situation will require it, reports IPN.

According to the mayor, the municipality has over 270 reservoirs for drinking and technical water, 20 tanks and 45 specialized vehicles for transporting water to the population. Also, over 200 water distribution points have been established, half of which are in kindergartens, 30 in medical institutions, and 75 in the capital’s sectors.

Ion Ceban also said that the municipality has 26 functional wells, managed by the City Hall and the Chisinau Apa-Canal enterprise, with a total flow of about 32 thousand cubic meters of water per day. To these are added the capacities of the Chisinau Mine, which currently provides about 5 thousand cubic meters of water per day, mainly used for technical needs.

The general mayor mentioned that the water reserves from the reservoir lakes of Novodnestrovsk and Dubasari are currently sufficient. At the same time, the municipality has prepared alternative solutions to ensure the continuity of the capital’s water supply in case of difficulties.

Authorities urge the population to reduce energy consumption during peak hours

Citizens are urged to use electricity responsibly and, as much as possible, to avoid using high-consumption appliances between the hours of 06:00 PM and 11:00 PM. The authorities’ recommendation comes in the context of pressures on the regional energy market, generated by the decline in electricity production in Romania, reports IPN.

SA Energocom specifies that the electricity needs of the Republic of Moldova are fully covered. However, during peak consumption hours, it may be necessary to purchase additional quantities from regional markets, where energy is, as a rule, more expensive.

In Romania, an energy alert has been instituted for 30 days, due to the reduction of electric power production, caused by the low flow of the Danube. Romanian authorities warn that the situation puts pressure on regional markets, may increase the need for imports, and can generate price fluctuations.

According to Energocom, 9,523 MWh of electrical energy were contracted for August 1st. Out of this volume, 33.05% comes from local and eligible renewable sources, 51.68% from bilateral import contracts, 13.85% from the Day-Ahead Market in Romania, through OPCOM and BRM, and 1.42% is produced by thermal power plants.

To alleviate pressure on the system and peak-time acquisition costs, consumers are encouraged to use washing machines, clothes dryers, electric boilers, and other appliances during the day, when energy consumption is lower.
