The official opening of the first negotiation chapters with the Republic of Moldova is one of the objectives assumed by the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council for the month of June. The statement was made by the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, during his first official visit to Chisinau, on Europe Day, reports IPN.
During a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu, the Cypriot leader stated that the expansion of the European Union must remain a process based on merit and concrete results. According to him, the Republic of Moldova demonstrates that it respects its commitments undertaken on the European path.
“The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU and the steps we are taking in this direction are concrete achievements that demonstrate that the European promise is real for those who work for it,” stated Nikos Christodoulides.
Maia Sandu stated that the EU expansion represents a strategic response to the security challenges in the region. The head of state emphasized that every country that shares European values and implements reforms has its place in the European family.
The President thanked Cyprus for the support given to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. Moreover, Maia Sandu reiterated that the authorities will continue the reforms in justice and investments in energy security.
The two presidents welcomed the financial support of 200 million euros offered by the EU for the development of the Moldovan economy, as well as the implementation of the bilateral social security agreement signed last year.
