Alexandru Balan, former deputy director of the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, arrested five months ago for the alleged disclosure to the KGB of Belarus of state secrets related to Romania, remains in the custody of Romanian authorities. The High Court of Cassation and Justice in Bucharest rejected Balan’s request to challenge the preventive arrest measure on Wednesday, extending it until February 27, reports IPN.

The former deputy chief of the SIS was arrested on September 8, 2025, in Timișoara, being accused of disclosing state secrets about Romania to KGB officers from Belarus. The Chief Prosecutor of the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism in Romania, Alina Albu, recently stated to IPN that the criminal trial is in the investigation phase, and the indictment is expected to be issued in February. Alina Albu clarified that Alexandru Balan is being investigated as a Romanian citizen, given the fact that he holds dual citizenship, Moldovan and Romanian.

Students from 108 schools will learn in laboratories equipped with robotics, digital microscopy, and 3D printing equipment, distributed by the Ministry of Education and Research through the “Improving the Quality of Education” Project. The value of the investment is approximately 4.8 million lei and the funding is ensured with the support of the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, reports IPN.

According to the MEC, the set includes multifunctional platforms for physics, chemistry and biology experiments. These platforms are equipped with sensors that allow the measurement of temperature, light, pressure and other parameters. The data collected during the experiments are displayed and graphically represented, helping students to analyze and evaluate the phenomena and reactions studied.

Electronic circuits and digital multimeters will also be distributed for physics classes. With their help, students will be able to study the operation of electrical circuits and measure voltage, intensity, and resistance.

The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education and Research, Valentina Olaru, stated that the new equipment will help students learn through practical activities. In her opinion, these facilities will contribute to the development of critical thinking, creativity and skills necessary for future professions.

The 108 institutions are part of the list of the 200 educational institutions benefiting from the “Improvement of Education Quality” Project.

NATO has approved a 27 billion euro project for the expansion of the fuel storage and pipeline network towards the eastern flank, the largest joint investment in the history of the North Atlantic Alliance. The President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, stated that Bucharest will receive approximately 2.15 billion euros for the construction of infrastructure on the country’s territory, reports IPN.

The decision was adopted by the North Atlantic Council, the decision-making body of the Alliance, and aims at modernizing the NATO fuel storage and distribution system, by constructing new facilities in the east and southeast of the Alliance. The project, which aims to ensure the necessary energy resources for NATO forces’ combat readiness, also includes the modernization of a pipeline network approximately 10 thousand kilometers long, built during the Cold War. Thus, the member states in the east and south of the continent will be integrated into the NATO storage and distribution system in Western Europe.

In a social media post, Nicusor Dan emphasized that the decision strengthens Romania’s role as a frontline ally in the Black Sea and enhances its strategic connectivity with NATO allies. Moreover, the leader from Cotroceni pointed out that the new network will create significant opportunities for the country’s economy and for Romanian companies.

The NATO pipeline and fuel storage system was built during the Cold War to ensure rapid fuel supply to allied forces in crisis or conflict situations. The existing network crosses several member states and stops at the German border. In recent years, Poland and Romania have requested its extension to the east, so that the infrastructure gets closer to areas considered high-risk security zones.
