9/11 victims commemorated in Chisinau

The victims of the September 11 attacks in the United States were today commemorated in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, city councilors, municipal officials and representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Moldova paid tribute to the victims by laying flowers at the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau this morning. The officials stood in a moment of silence and then lit candles in memory of those who were killed in the terrorist attacks 7 years ago. In his speech, Dorin Chirtoaca has expressed his hope that such tragedies will never happen again and that every person on this planet can live in peace without anyone imposing some abusive measures on his life. The city councilors, meeting for the first time after the summer recess, also kept a moment of silence to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people that died in the 9/11 attacks. Chisinau City Council chair Eduard Musuc stated: “the attacks committed 7 years ago were not just an an attack on the United States but on the whole civilized world and on its security”. “Seven years ago today, evil swept into America's skies and onto the American soil”, said John Balian, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, speaking before the Chisinau councilors. “In a violent instant thousands of innocent souls were stolen from us”, he continued, in fair Romanian, apparently quoting a speech by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The single dissenting voice was that of city councilor Valery Klimenko, known for his pro-Russian inclination. “Evil comes from evil, and what happened on September 11 was just a requital for the imperial policy promoted by the USA for decades”, declared Klimenko, referring to the events in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Georgia. He asked Balian to tell the U.S. Ambassador, and the Ambassador, in turn, to the U.S. President that “these events will continue as long as the USA promotes policies unfriendly to other states”. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Most of them died in Manhattan, in the heart of New York, under the debris of what was once known as the World Trade Center.
