€8.7 Million from Sweden to Support Vulnerable Households

Sweden will contribute €8.7 million to Moldova’s Energy Vulnerability Fund. These funds will enable the state to support the most vulnerable households and help them reduce the burden of energy costs this winter. This announcement was made by Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Benjamin Dousa, during a joint press conference with Moldova’s Foreign Minister, Mihai Popsoi, IPN reports.

According to the Swedish official, this financial assistance is in addition to the EU's energy support for Moldova throughout the winter. "Our support will complement the efforts undertaken by the country's authorities to ensure stability in the supply of gas and electricity", added Benjamin Dousa.

The Swedish minister assured that Sweden and the EU will continue to support Moldova and stand by its side. "The energy crisis truly reveals who your real friends are. Let me assure you that Sweden is a true friend, a long-term partner. We will do everything in our power to help the people of Moldova", he stated.

In turn, Moldova’s Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi expressed appreciation for Sweden's support in overcoming the crises Moldova has faced in recent years, emphasizing that Sweden has remained a reliable partner, contributing to the fight against corruption, increasing transparency, and countering hybrid threats.

"Sweden reaffirms its commitment to supporting Moldova in strengthening its energy independence. Swedish assistance has been crucial in critical moments, helping to reduce vulnerabilities and ensure a resilient energy system," said Mihai Popsoi. At the same time, he highlighted that Sweden remains a trusted partner in efforts to prevent the use of energy as a geopolitical pressure tool, and Swedish support helps Moldova diversify its energy sources and supply routes.

Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden has provided over 1.7 billion Moldovan lei in bilateral assistance and energy support, in addition to aid provided through the EU. This support has focused on rule of law, job creation, environmental reforms, and more.
