Some 84% of Moldova’s population believes that climate change is a serious reason for concern, according to the thematic opinion poll “Public Opinion Barometer in the Field of Climate Change” that was conducted by [imas] with support from Soros Foundation Moldova, being commissioned by the public association “Green City Lab Moldova”. The persons aged over 55 are most interested in this issue. Also, over 10% of the people younger than 25 are interested in climate change, IPN reports.
72% of those surveyed think the Republic of Moldova is affected by climate change. Almost 40% of the respondents said that climate change is the result of the people’s action.
89% of those interviewed believe climate change is a pressing problem, while 10% consider this is not an urgent problem.
Only 25% of those polled said they extensively inform themselves about climate change, while 75% think there is place for more information. Most often, the people inform themselves on the issue from TV, from friends and family members, through the Internet, by visiting social networking sites, by watching films. Some 57% of those surveyed learned about climate change from the speech of senior officials.
The number of those who inform themselves on the issue from Telegram rose to 24% the past few years. Almost half of the respondents (47%) said they need information on the issue.
Most of those interviewed (80%) said tree planting is a solution to climate change, while 73% believe the quantity of toxic waste (nuclear, chemical) needs to be reduced. Among the measures that the Government needs to take to solve the problem, the respondents mentioned the switchover to electric cars, cleaning of water, building of waste processing plants, reducing of quantity of pesticides in agriculture, sorting of waste, use of solar batteries.
The “Public Opinion Barometer in the Field of Climate Change” was carried out by [imas] during March 19 – April 5 as part of the project “Public perception of climate change problem in the Republic of Moldova”. It covered 1,208 persons aged 18 and over, with the interviews being conducted at the homes of respondents.
