72 couples asked for in vitro fertilization from mandatory health insurance funds

Seventy-two couples in 2019 and in the first half of 2020 filed applications to benefit from in vitro fertilization from the mandatory health insurance funds (50 in 2019 and 22 in 2020). In a response to IPN, the Hospital Medical Assistance Policy Division of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said the in vitro fertilization success rate in 2019 was 43.3% or 26 pregnancies (of the 60 in vitro fertilization procedures performed).

Three private medical-sanitary institutions were contracted to provide assisted human reproduction services in 2019 from the mandatory health insurance funds. These are: the Medical Center Repromed, the International Hospital Medpark and the Medical Center TerraMed. A sum of 1.903,7 million lei was allocated for performing 60 in vitro fertilization procedures. In 2020, there was contracted the Familia Clinic (New Med Life).

During the state of emergency declared in Moldova in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, the commission for assessing couples that applied to be offered assisted human reproduction services didn’t work. It later resumed work by observing all the epidemiological measures.

To be selected and benefit from in vitro fertilization from the mandatory health insurance funds, the couples should meet a number of medical criteria. There are accepted pairs for which conventional treatments didn’t produce results during five years.

The eligible couples can benefit from one in vitro fertilization procedure with mandatory health insurance funds.

There are no data about the infertile couples in the Republic of Moldova.
