The people in Moldova’s Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia will take part in the September 5 referendum, said Nicolae Andronic, the head of the Republican People’s Party, of which the Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal is a member, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference on July 20, Nicolae Andronic said the statement of the Gagauz People’s Assembly was signed by 16 of the 19 local deputies who represent the Communists Party and the Social Democratic Party. Thus, the statement does not reflect the views of the Gagauz people. “About 70% of the population of Gagauzia is in favor of direct election of Moldova’s President,” Nicolae Andronic said. In another development, the head of the Republican People’s Party said the amendment of article 78 of the Constitution will not fully solve the constitutional problem. According to him, Article 98 should also be modified so that the President designates the Premier at the suggestion of the parliamentary majority, not on his own initiative. “These problems will result in new problems because the members of the Alliance for European Integration cannot come to terms. Acting President Mihai Ghimpu used trumps that only increase the rating of the Communists Party, as the fir tree stolen by Voronin helped Dorin Chirtoaca to improve his rating,” Nicolae Andronic said. The Republican People’s Party was registered by the Central Election Commission as participant in the campaign preceding the September 5 referendum, where the people will be asked if they want the Constitution to be modified so that it allows for direct election of the head of state.
