Almost 67% of the respondents of the Barometer presented by the sociological company Data Inteligente (iData) are determined to vote in the referendum on joining the European Union. Some 26% of those polled gave a negative answer, and over 7% either do not know or did not answer this question. At the same time, if the referendum were held next Sunday, 46% of those questioned would vote for amending the Constitution so as to stipulate the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU in it. 39% would vote against it, and 12.7% do not know or did not answer. 2.4% of the respondents would not go to the polls.
The survey, which was presented at a news conference hosted by IPN, shows that the vast majority of the country’s citizens support the accession to the European Union. This is over 56.1% of all the respondents. “In particular, the residents of Chisinau and of the central districts of the country are for integration into the European Union. Those from southern and northeastern districts are against. But, in general, there are only a few regions where the share of those who are against is significantly high. There are regions where, for example, only 10% are against. It goes to the center, to Chisinau,” said the director general of iData Mihai Bologan.
Asked if they are for or against the union of the Republic of Moldova with Romania, 35.7% of the respondents said they are in favor, 54.8% said they are against, and 9.5% do not have an option or did not answer. “The unionists are generally closer to the center, in regions where the share of Romanian citizens is a little higher. And there are regions where the unionists are below 10%. For example, most of those who are against the union are in Cahul, Taraclia and Comrat,” stated Mihai Bologan.
The participants in the survey were asked if they decided who they will vote for in the presidential election of October 20. 58.7% answered ‘yes’, 34.6% did not decide, and 7% did not answer.
Asked who they would vote as President from a list of politicians presented to them, most of those surveyed, 26.8%, chose Maia Sandu. She is followed by Renato Usatyi with 12.7%, Alexandr Stoianoglo – 11.2%, Vasile Tarlev – 6.3%, Irina Vlah – 6.1%, Ion Chicu – 4.1%, Tudor Ulianovschi – 3.5%, Igor Munteanu – 2.1%, and Natalia Morari – 1.8%. The other announced candidates were mentioned by less than 1% of the respondents.
“We can see that, with the start of the election campaign, some of the politicians become more visible and the citizens notice this. 4.3% of the respondents will not vote, as they said. 15% said ‘I still don’t know’, while 35 said ‘I don’t answer’. There is a space of about 15% of the population that is still thinking and here the politicians still have work to do,” said the deputy director of iData, Veronica Ateș.
The survey covered a sample of 1,021 people from 293 localities. The data were collected during September 13-18, and the maximum sampling error is 3%.
