62% of Moldova's electricity needs will be satisfied with imports from Romanian

Moldova will import 62% of the electricity needed by the right bank of the Nistru River from Romania. Most of the purchases will be made on the Romanian stock exchange OPCOM. Moldova’s Energocom said the consumption needs in January will be satisfied with locally produced power and with imports from Romania, IPN reports.

The thermal power plants in Chisinau and Balti are expected to generate over 127,000 MWh, which is almost 28% of the electricity consumption. 46,000 MWh will be renewable energy from installations that have a fixed charge set by the National Agency for Energy Regulation and from the free market. In total, this is about 10% of the needs.

Over 178,000 MWh or 39% of the needs will be purchased from the Romanian OPCOM stock exchange and another 105,000 MWh (23%) - based on bilateral contracts.

The authorities called again on the citizens to secure beforehand backup lighting sources - functional flashlights, additional batteries or lamps that use rechargeable batteries – given the risk of power cuts. In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Ministry of Internal Affairs also suggests using portable or solar LED lamps, and warns about the need to monitor open fires and candles to prevent fires.

For the current cold season, the Government approved a plan of measures, with gas and electricity supply scenarios and with alternative solutions for supplying institutions and the population in case of power cuts.
