The population should know the importance of collecting waste separately, especially in the case of products that pollute the environment and should no way be thrown in bins with household waste. 500 kg of used batteries were gathered during only two years of the installation of containers for collecting such batteries, IPN reports.
Contacted by IPN, head of the Territorial Development and Cleanup Division of the Public Amenities Division Vasile Efros said the batteries are now at the storehouse of a public association that is a partner of the project and will remain there until a solution is found, including a financial one, to take them abroad for recycling.
Within another project launched in 2015 with the support of the Embassy of Poland in Chisinau, there was promoted the separate collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment. About 300 containers were placed then in front of apartment buildings and some of the lyceums. There was carried out a wide campaign to inform the population about the necessity of collecting waste separately.
In another development, Vasile Efros said the project “Garbage bins for a clean capital” has been implemented during the last few years. Within this, about 1,000 garbage bins for collecting glass, plastic and paper were set up in public places and parks.
Last year, a pilot project to sort household waste was launched through the agency of the Public Amenities Division. During seven months, 15% of the quantity of waste was sorted and this will help landfills to have a longer life, stated Vasile Efros.
