An Anticancer Week themed “Prophylactic screening in early detection of cancer” is taking place in Moldova during June 4-10. This initiative aims to increase awareness of the cancer risk factors. As many as 5 635 persons died of cancer in Moldova last year, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the Ministry of Health, the people’s awareness should be heightened at global level so as to prevent cancer. The country’s population can benefit from free consultancy at the Oncology Institute in Chisinau. Doctors say the periodic examinations and detection of the first signs increase considerably the healing chances. Over 8,000 persons suffering from cancer were identified in Moldova last year. Malignant tumor morbidity was 227 persons per 100 000 people. Colorectal cancer was the most often met malignant tumor. It was followed by breast and lung cancers, skin cancer, hemoblastosis, and gastric cancer. Cancer is one of the diseases that cause the largest number of deaths worldwide. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, 12.7 million new cases of cancer were recorded globally in 2010. 3.2 million Europeans are diagnosed with cancer every year. This figure is on the rise and is expected to reach 15 million by the end of 2020.
