Launched last November, the public broadband radio access 4G electronic communication services are now available in the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti, in 9 towns and 22 villages of Moldova, shows a report by the regulator of the ICT sector (ANRCETI), IPN reports.
The 4G network owned by SA Orange Moldova covers over 859,000 people or 26% of the country’s population, while the 4G network of SA Moldcell - over 564,000 people or 14.3% of the population.
In the first year of the launch of the 4G services, the number of subscribers to such services has been lower than projected. At end-November, SA Orange Moldova had 1,131 subscribers, while SA Moldcell – 305.
According to specialists of the ANRCETI, such a state of affairs is due to the lack of wide range of terminals that ensure the use of 4G technology and the high prices of the terminals existing on the market of Moldova.
Moldcell and Orange Moldova paid by a state tax of €10 million for using 4 G services. These services ensure a mobile Internet connection speed of up to 100 Mbps, which is much higher than that through the 3G networks.
