£456,000 from accounts of Luca Filat to be transferred to Moldova

The authorities in London decided to transfer to Moldova the sum of £456,068 that is the size of the funds sequestrated from the bank accounts of Moldovan citizen Luca Filat, the son of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat. British Ambassador to Moldova Steven Fisher informed about this acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration said that in accordance with the United Nations Convention against Corruption, the return of the sum will be performed by the relevant authorities of the Republic of Moldova, for projects for the benefit of the citizens. Aureliu Ciocoi welcomed the British authorities’ decision. The two officials agreed that the responsible institutions will discuss the exact mechanism by which these funds could be transferred to Moldova.

In 2018, Luca Filat was forced by the authorities in London to yield up almost half a million pounds. His accounts were frozen in May 2018, in accordance with the Criminal Finances Act, after investigators of the National Crime Agency suspected that the money was obtained illegally.
