44.5% of respondents would vote for PSRM in legislative elections next Sunday, poll

The Party of Socialists (PSRM) and the Party “Action and Solidarity” are the main political forces in the Republic of Moldova. If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the PSRM would poll 44.5% of the vote, while the PAS – 22.9%. The Democratic Party would gain 5.5% of the vote, while Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” – 3.6%. The poll was carried out by the Public Opinion Fund, being commissioned by the newspaper “Timpul”.

In a news conference at IPN, Public Opinion Fund director Andrei Lukian said about 86% of the Moldovans are dissatisfied with the situation in the country. The same percentage of Moldovans considers early legislative elections should be held in Moldova.

Slightly over 50% of those polled said Moldova needs a President with bigger powers to be able to achieve results in the long run. About 28% believe the powers should be clearly divided, while 8% think Moldova needs a Parliament with bigger powers.

The trust in the President of the Republic of Moldova is greater than in the Government or Parliament. 56.7% of the respondents have “a lot of” and “particular” trust in the President, 32.5% in the Government, while 24.7% in Parliament. Igor Dodon is the most trusted political personality, who enjoys the trust of 36% of those surveyed.  Maia Sandu comes next with 22% and is followed by Andrei Nastase with 3%.

As regards the latest political events, 52% do not support the blocking by the Government and Parliament of most of the initiatives submitted by the President, while 49% are for empowering the President to ban the participation by Moldovan soldiers in military exercises in Ukraine.

As to the country’s foreign policy, if asked to vote in a referendum on joining the European Union or the Eurasian Union, 41% of the respondents would vote for joining the EU, while 45% for joining the Eurasian Union. 22% of those questioned would vote for Moldova’s union with Romania in an eventual plebiscite, while 63% would vote against. Also, 61% of the respondents would vote against Moldova’s entry into NATO, while 20% would vote for this.

Some 73% of those polled consider Moldovan should be the official language, while 23% consider Romanian should be the official language of Moldova.

Andrei Lukian noted that the figures didn’t change much compared with the poll of this March. Only a slight rise in the distrust in the President and parties was recorded.

The survey was conducted during October 7-29, 2017 and covered a sample of 4,517 people. It is representative for the country’s population and has a margin of sampling error of plus-minus 1.5%.
