Over 4,000 police officers will work on holidays to maintain public order, regulate traffic, and respond to emergencies. On New Year's Eve, more than 1,000 officers will be deployed to the Great National Assembly Square to make sure festivities proceed in a safe environment, free of people carrying guns or who are heavily drunk.
The General Police Inspectorate says traffic officers will be on duty on the main national roads, at hotspots and during rush hours.
Additionally, the police will conduct awareness patrols to prevent burglaries, auto thefts and pickpocketing. The members of the public are advised to ensure their homes are well locked before leaving and announce the neighbors. Those staying at home are asked to call the police when they see suspicious people near the house. Also, it should be avoided to leave cars parked unattended, especially overnight. If there is no other choice, the owners should make sure they don't leave anything valuable inside.
During the night, people are advised to keep away from poorly lighted areas, to avoid keeping valuables on display and opt for traveled and patrolled streets.
People who have been drinking are advised not to leave home. Another recommendation is for the parents, who should instruct children not to open the door to strangers under any pretext when they are home alone.
The General Police Inspectorate is reminding the public to call 112 or 902 whenever they see acts that could affect public order and safety.
