The tenth contingent of service members of the National Army goes on a six-month peacekeeping mission to Kosovo on December 7. The service members will replace the contingent that went on a mission in June. The contingent consists of 40 service members, 33 of whom are infantry soldiers, while seven are bomb disposal technicians, IPN reports.
The Moldovan service members will be deployed at the multinational base Camp Vilaggio Italia in Pech. In the deployment ceremony, charge d’affaires at the Embassy of Italy in Moldova Antonio Ionio said that for Italy it is a joy to host a platoon of Moldova service members within the multinational peacekeeping group. He approved of Moldova’s contribution to peacekeeping and stability in Europe, saying the training and common exercises are an occasion for professional growth.
Minister of Defense of Moldova Eugeniu Sturza said these missions are an opportunity for gaining experience from service members of other countries. He noted the service members who go on missions are well-trained. These were chosen at a contest from among the best of those who expressed their wish to leave for KFOR.
The service members will be involved in military facilities security and guard and patrolling missions. The mandate of the tenth contingent of Moldovan service members in Kosovo will last until next June.
