350,000 signatures have been collected in favor of uninominal voting system, PDM

The Democratic Party (PDM) is collecting signatures in favor of the uninominal voting system and has collected over 350,000 signatures in about ten days, the party’s deputy chairman Andrian Candu said after a working meeting of the PDM.

Andrian Candu also said that the initiative on the uninominal voting system was registered in Parliament so as to meet the procedural conditions and submit it to the Venice Commission for appraisal. The initiative was also made public and anyone can examine it and formulate proposals or objections to it.

A debate on the issue will be held this week. It will involve representatives of parliamentary and extraparliamentary parties, constitutional experts in electoral systems and representatives of civil society.

In the same connection, Andrian Candu called on the NGOs to remain outside politics and not to promote the agenda of the opposition or of the government. “I would like the representatives of civil society to show equidistance in this process so as to make sure the debate is objective,” he stated.

The PDM’s initiative to amend the Constitution and exclude the immunity of MPs was another subject discussed in the party’s meeting. The Democrats initiated the procedure for collecting signatures of MP and already obtained the Constitutional Court’s consent. The initiative on the exclusion of parliamentary immunity will be included in the Parliament’s agenda this week.
