334,400 students go to school in Moldova, 97.9% of whom to state schools

As many as 334,400 students attended primary and secondary education institutions at the start of the 2020/21 school year, up 1,200 or 0.4% on the previous school year. 50.8% of the students are boys, while 52.9% study in urban areas, IPN reports, with reference to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The network of education institutions consists of 106 primary schools, 787 secondary schools, 338 lyceums and ten schools for children with intellectual and physical disabilities. Of the 1,241 institutions, 98.1% are publicly owned, while 74.5% work in rural areas.

Some 97.9% of the students of primary and secondary schools attend state-run institutions, up 0.2% or 0,700 students on the 2020/21 school year. The number of students in private schools rose by 0,500 or 7.1%.

The first graders who studied pre-school education programs represent 97.8%, as opposed to 97.3% in the 2019/20 school year.

Of the total 334,400 students of primary and secondary schools, 80.6% study in Romanian, 19.2% in Russian, while 0.2% in other languages (Ukrainian, English, Bulgarian).

English continues to be the most popular foreign language in the 2020/21 school year. This language is studied by 72.5% of the students, an increase of 3.7% on the previous year. Also, 31.5% of the total students study French, down 2.9% on the 2019-2020 school year, while
29.6% study Russian, 1.1% down. 62.4% of the students studying English are from urban areas, while over 60% of the students studying French and Russian are from rural areas.
