300 signatures collected in support of ratification of Rome Statute

Some 300 persons have given their signatures in support of the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The signatures have been collected on Saturday in Chisinau by volunteers of the Amnesty International (AI) Moldova. The petitions are to be submitted to the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities, which haven't ratified the statute yet. Veaceslav Balan, AI Moldova's campaign coordinator, told Info-Prim Neo that on July 17 was 10 years since the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This international tribunal aims to to punish individuals who commit genocide and other serious international crimes. If Moldova ratifies the document, first of all, it will provide its citizens with additional safeguards against violations of fundamental human rights. Secondly, this is a way for Moldova to express its solidarity with African and Asian countries which currently suffer from war crimes and cases of genocide”, says Veaceslav Balan. Moldova signed the Rome Statute on 8 September 2000, but hasn't ratified it so far. To the present date the document has been ratified by 107 countries, including all the EU members and most of the African and Latin American countries. The latest significant event in the activity of the International Criminal Court is the decision to issue an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar Hassan el-Bashir for possible prosecution on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
