A girl, 3, was mortally injured in a rural park in Floresti district. Police say she was struck by a male driver, 34, while he was reversing his Nissan “in fast acceleration”.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, the driver also failed to check to the rear of his car before engaging in the reverse maneuver.
Immediately after the accident, the girl’s father rushed her to the hospital, only for her to be pronounced dead upon arrival.
The driver’s biological samples were taken to check whether he had been drinking and an order has been issued to pace him in custody for 72 hours.
The public must be mindful, the Inspectorate warns, that young children often cannot been in rear-view mirrors due to their small stature. Drivers must exercise great caution around children and double-check before engaging in any maneuver. It is also recommended that when maneuvering a car, especially in tight spaces such as a yard, children should be held in place by adults.
