250,000 Moldovans live in flood risk areas

93 settlements in Moldova with a total population of 250,000 people are living in flood risk areas. Marin Adam, the director of the Waters Agency told a Tuesday meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture that enforcement works should be launched urgently to strengthen dikes, Info-Prim Neo reports. The total length of flood banks on the Nistru, the Prut and smaller rivers is 1,014 kilometers. They protect a total 95,000 hectares of farmland and thousands of households from flooding. “Dams and dikes are in an unsatisfactory condition and need urgent enforcement works”, said Marin Adam. Such works are already under way in 6 villages in northern Moldova. In Gotesti, Cantemir district, documentation is being prepared to start building a new dike. The existing dikes were built about four decades ago, which puts them past their life expectancy.
