25 years of independence marked at Library of Congress in Washington

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu, together with Moldova’s Embassy in the United States, gave a reception in Washington, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Moldova’s independence. The event was held at the Library of Congress and involved U.S. government officials, important political personalities and representatives of the Moldovan diaspora, IPN reports.

According to the Parliament’s press service, in his welcoming speech Andrian Candu said the 25 years of independence of Moldova were marked by a number challenges and time and effort were needed to overcome them. “The 25 years haven’t always been as we wanted. There were many changes, some of which too prompt, and we didn’t always know to react as firmly and courageously as the promoters of the struggle for independence did. Looking at the events retrospectively, I must admit that Moldova’s transformation lasted longer, but there is no recipe for swift success,” stated the official.

Andrian Candu said that now Moldova has a well-defined country project – the irreversible European integration objective. “As 25 years ago, we started a new trip. We have a clear option – the political association and economic integration into the European Union,” stated the Speaker.

The official thanked the U.S. for the support and assistance provided to Moldova in time in strengthening the rule of law and in modernizing the country.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bridget Brink welcomed the reforms assumed by the government of Moldova and encouraged the government coalition to implement reforms beneficial to the people. “The United States supports the progress made by the Republic of Moldova. During the 25 years of independence, the Republic of Moldova made effort to become a more prosperous and democratic country, for the people’s benefit. We welcome the positive actions of the government of Chisinau and the reforms done to ensure a European future for Moldova,” she stated.

Congressmen David Price and Joseph Pitts also transmitted messages of support to Moldova.

Attending the event, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Carpenter appreciated the exemplary participation by Moldovan service members in peacekeeping operations, underlining the support provided by the U.S. in organizing training and refresher courses for bomb squads.

Former U.S. ambassador to Moldova Pamela Smith addressed a congratulatory message to the Moldovan people in the Romanian language.

A folkloric ensemble consisting of Moldovans who settled in the U.S. gave a performance of folk music and dances.
