War veterans and relatives commemorated those killed in battle in Afghanistan on February 15. Government officials and ordinary people laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Eternal Memory to the Country’s Sons” in Chisinau in their memory, Info-Prim Neo reports. A veteran said he every day remembers what they went through, but he remained only with memories and promises made by the authorities. “The country’s administration forgot about us. They took a part of the benefits we enjoyed and now we have only two – free trips by trolleybus and 100 lei a month in support. Earlier, they put us on lists for being offered apartments, but now we have only promises,” said the man. Another man said he was sent to the front when he was 18 and fought for two years. He lost many friends there and remained with pain in his soul. “The war is something terrible. They show there bravery there, but I wish no one to become a brave man by such a method,” said the veteran. Among the officials, the Head of Parliament Marian Lupu and the team of the PDM were the first to lay flowers at the memorial. Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta came later. Marian Lupu said the wars must be avoided. “That war wasn’t hours, but 12,500 Moldovans took part in it as the realities imposed such a course,” he stated. Minister of Labor Valentina Buliga said that 375 Afghan war veterans this year will receive by a lump sum of 500 lei from the national population support fund. The Premier thanked those who contributed to building and strengthening the Republic of Moldova, saying the authorities are grateful to all those heroes. The war lasted for 10 years. 1 million people from the current Commonwealth of Independent States took part in it. About 400 Moldovans did not return home. This year it is 24 years of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan.
