Twenty-one drivers who tried to corrupt patrol inspectors during the first five months of the year face fines and jail terms. These gave sums of up to 10,000 lei to police inspectors to get rid of punishment for driving under the influence of alcohol or speeding, IPN reports.
In a press release, the Ministry of the Interior’s Internal Protection and Anticorruption Service said seven of the 21 cases of active corruption happened in the municipality of Chisinau. The drivers offered sums of 100 to 10,000 lei to police officers for not being held accountable.
The drivers tried to get rid of punishment for driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, driving without a driver’s license or with a false driver’s license, travelling with tinted front windscreens and front side windows, illegal parking.
The 21 persons could serve up to six years in jail or could be fined 100,000 to 200,000 lei.
According to the National Patrol Inspectorate, over 90% of the accidents occur through the drivers’ fault and among the main causes of these are speeding and non-adjustment of the speed to the conditions on the road or to weather conditions, non-giving of way at intersections or crosswalks and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
