The president of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) Igor Munteanu is sure that the Republic of Moldova can become a member of the European Union in 2030, which is a priority set by the party in its constitution congress that was held in Chisinau on November 5, IPN reports.

According to him, the year 2030 as EU accession period is not at all short and is probably too long as all the processes at the moment are accelerated. The Republic of Moldova needs determined, balanced and well-thought out political accession to the EU. What we should now do is to fulfill the undertaken commitments, like the nine imperative preconditions formulated by the European Council on June 23 for the Republic of Moldova. “We surely should not wait for unrealistic presents,” stated Igor Munteanu.

“We have the experience of the countries that joined the European Union and a window of opportunity opened by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The experience of the post-Socialist of Soviet states that became EU members shows that the accession to the EU is preceded by the accession to NATO, which is not a mandatory condition, but such a move easier links the countries to a collective security system. Moldovan society will have to take important decisions the coming years over the neutrality status and the camp that that the country should join,” stated the CUB leader.  

According to him, “we should not forget that the European Union is also a customs union that ensures the free movement of goods and services. We will have to take huge steps to modernize the production sector, to restart the industries and to reform agriculture with all its sectors so as to become competitive and to benefit from the opportunities of the European market. We are already integrated into the internal market of the EU with 70% of exports, but we have the lowest incomes on the European continent. If we focus on the accession process and jump from the current neighborhood policy to the deeper integration policy, we will all stand to gain.”
