Schools – 1,347*
The network of primary and secondary education institutions includes 1,347 schools, including 2 evening schools. Most schools, or 98.9% are public, and all the 15 non-public schools are located in urban areas. In the 2014/15 school year, the total number of schools decreased by 27. There were closed 12 primary schools, 12 gymnasiums, 3 lyceums and one auxiliary school. At the same time, 32 lyceums were downgraded to gymnasiums, and 13 other from gymnasiums to primary schools. In Moldova, there are 105 primary schools (grades 1 to 4), 794 gymnasiums (grades 1 to 9), 424 lyceums (grades 1 to 12) and 22 schools for children with mental or physical disabilities.
School students – 339,900*
As of the beginning of the school year 2014/15, 339,900 children were enrolled in primary and secondary education, 3.4% down on the previous year. Most of them, or 98.8% study in public schools. 40.8% are enrolled in primary education, 47.7% study in gymnasiums, and 11.5% in lyceums. The ratio of boys to girls in primary and secondary education was 50.6% to 49.4%. In lyceum grades, however, girls represent 57.1%. The number of students enrolled in special education was 1,538, reducing by a significant14.9% from the previous school year.
Graduates – 33,700*
In 2014, the number of gymnasium graduates reduced by 4.4%, and the number of lyceum graduates dropped by 14.4 % on the previous year. Two-thirds of gymnasium graduates are from rural areas, and two-thirds of lyceum graduates are from urban areas. 72.7% of the total number of graduates received a Baccalaureate diploma, a 7.9 percentage point decrease from the previous year.
Teachers – 30,800*
13% of teachers are aged under 30 years, 20% are in the age group 30-39 years, 25.5% in the age group 40-49 years, 26.8% in the age group 50-59 years, and 14.7% are 60 years or older. 58.2% of teachers served 20 years or more. Women represented 85.2% of teachers. 3,700 people, or 12.1% are in managing positions.
