2008 to be designated national Year of Prince Cantemir

The central authorities intend to honour the Cantemir dynasty by designating 2008 as the national Year of Prince Dimitrie Cantemir. The final decision is to be made by the Government this week. The draft action plan on celebrating the Year of Prince Cantemir includes international scientific conferences devoted to this dynasty, roundtables, seminars, etc. In addition, Moldovan researchers will be engaged in fundamental research works for the purpose of capitalising on the cultural and scientific heritage of Dimitrie and Antioh Cantemir, while the authorities will make arrangements to celebrate Dimitrie Cantemir’s 335th birth anniversary and erect a monument to the Moldovan ruler in Chisinau and a replica in the Russian town of Tzaritsino. Dimitrie Cantemir was twice Prince of Moldova (in March-April 1693 and in 1710–1711). He was also a prolific man of letters – philosopher, historian, composer, musicologist, linguist, ethnographer, and geographer. Cantemir’s progressive ideas and encyclopaedic spirit made him a remarkable personality of the European culture.
