The Customs Service and the National Food Safety Agency during the last two months of 2016 seized over 500 tonnes of meat that individuals intended to bring into the country. The monitoring activities were carried out on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border in a move to prevent the reappearance of hotbeds of African swine fever, IPN reports.
According to the Customs Service, 43 attempts to smuggle raw pork and products from pork into the country were thwarted on December 31, 2016 and January 1, 2017. About 200 kg were seized in the period.
The Customs Service and the National Food Safety Agency reiterate the call to persons who cross the border to refrain from purchasing and importing meat products that come from animals vulnerable to African swine fever – domestic pigs and wild boars – so as to avoid possible dangers to health and considerable economic damage.
