20% of Moldovans don't have health insurance

One in five Moldovans doesn't have health insurance, Mircea Buga, director of the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), stated at a meeting held to mark CNAM's 11th anniversary. Mircea Buga also spoke about progresses, mentioning the doubling of compensated prescription medicines over the last few years, to 943 drug names as of 2011, and a sixfold increase in the amounts invested in health care projects, to 114 million lei. Buga said that beneficiaries are now more protected, as CNAM compensates on average 70% of prescription costs, as compared to 60% in 2010. Among CNAM's future plans Mircea Buga mentioned the improvement of health care services provided to the insured and the extension of the list of compensated drugs. The event was attended, among other officials, by Prime Minister Vlad Filat. According to a press release from the Government, he said that any anniversary is a good occasion to evaluate one's progress. “It's important to be pragmatic and acknowledge the progress we achieved in a period of time, but we also need to have the courage to identify the drawbacks of our work, come up with viable solutions and show will in implementing them”, stated the Prime Minister. The National Health Insurance Company is an autonomous state organization. It was founded by the Government on 7 September 2001 with the primary mission to enforce the Law on Mandatory Health Insurance.
