The 20 families that sustained losses as a result of the fire that destroyed a part of an apartment building in Buiucani district of Chisinau on October 23 will receive sums equal to the value of the sum paid for the apartments by way of compensation. By 50,000 lei will be added to the sum for buying furniture or for other costs. A bank account will be opened for donations intended for the given families, IPN reports.
Mayor general Ion Ceban told a news conference that he suggested providing financial support to the persons who suffered as a result of the fire in the meeting of the municipal Commission on Emergencies and Extraordinary Public Health Commission. The proposal was unanimously accepted.
The mayor said the biggest apartment that burned was 25 square meters in area and cost €19,000. Also, the families from the lower apartments will be offered financial assistance for repair works as a result of assessments. If the reserve fund does not contain sufficient money, he will request the Chisinau Municipal Council to allocate the necessary funds.
Ion Ceban related that the building was cleaned up yesterday. The water was collected and the people were helped to clean the bloc. The sixth floor will be fully removed and the roof will be reconstructed. The apartments from the attic-like floor that burned cannot be restored in such conditions. The mayor called on the business entities that can to support the families.
According to the mayor, the persons who are to blame for the serious violations in such constructions should be held legally accountable. The responsible bodies should turn their attention to this case.
The General Inspectorate for Emergencies said the fire in the building located at 17/3 Ion Pelivan St started inside a sixth-floor apartment and spread all over the attic-like floor. Over 70 rescuers and firefighters and 11 firefighting vehicles struggled to extinguish the fire. Among the examined versions are a short circuit in the electric power network, violation of the fire safety rules when using electrical equipment and careless smoking. The expert conclusions will be presented when the examination is completed.
