1st year students unveil schemes of cheating at bac exams

A research among 1st and 2nd students from two Moldovan universities unveil schemes of cheating and copying at baccalaureate exams. The project coordinator, Andrei Lutenco, the director of the National Center for Transparency and Human Rights (NCTHR), has told a news conference the schemes involve both students and parents, and teachers solving the exam, but also assistants who should monitor the correctness of behavior during tests, Info-Prim Neo reports “At a certain moment the assistant leaves the exam room only to return with a pile of papers containing the solutions for the bac exams, and distributes them to some students. Some students also use devices as mobile phones,” Lutenco said. The assistants' leniency “costs” up to 500 lei. Some students said they had managed to get the topics and solutions an hour before the exam, as all the assistants had to do was to look through the open door and signal out if possible Education Ministry Representatives were around. The kin relations also had a word to say in getting higher grades, especially in rural areas. Some work papers had different signs on them what is forbidden, Andrei Lutenco hinted. The project “Monitoring and Preventing Corruption in Moldova's Higher Education Institutions” was developed by the National Center for Transparency and Human Rights, the Anti-Corruption Alliance, with the support of Eurasia Foundation. The implementing team interviewed students from Moldova State University from Chisinau and Alecu Russo University from Balti. Over a half of the pupils from Chisinau got 8, 9 and 10grades at their baccalaureate exams this year. The evaluation found many identical mistakes in different papers, what allows supposing they copied en masse, school inspectors later told a sitting with schoolmasters.
