16% of Moldova’s population is over 60 years old

At the beginning of 2015, there were over 570,000 elderly people in Moldova, which is 16% of the population. 58% of the elderly people live in rural areas. Each third person is aged between 60 and 64, while 13.4% are older than 80, IPN reports.

Over the last few years, the number of persons older than 60 has increased. In 2014, the population aging coefficient rose by 0.5% on a year before. The average length of life after the age of 60 is 19.5 years for women and 15.6 years for men. Life expectancy for the elderly people from urban areas is by 2.5 years longer than for those from rural areas.

The main causes of death among the elderly people are the diseases of the circulatory apparatus (70%), malignant tumors (13.5%) and diseases of the digestive apparatus (6.7%). According to statistics, about 69% of the elderly people suffer from chronic diseases. Approximately two thirds of the elderly consider that their state of health is satisfactory, each third person believes it is bad or very bad, while 5.2% think it is good.

The data of the National House of Social Insurance show the persons with disabilities aged 60 and over total about 46,700, representing 25.4% of the disabled persons who receive pensions and disability benefits.

On January 1, 2015, the average old age pension was 1,114 lei, up 6.2% on 2015 and 33% on 2010. The average value of the subsistence minimum in 2014 was 1,343 lei, an increase of 1.3% on a year before.
