16 media institutions form Consortium for Gender Equality
Sixteen media institutions have joined to form the Media Consortium for Gender Equality. The association will champion the concept of a society in which women and men have equal rights and chances.
At the launch ceremony of the Consortium on Monday, December 3, the organisers presented the findings of several studies that reveal the persistence of a solid dose of ignorance in the Moldovan media regarding gender equality, which mainly stems from unawareness of the fact that gender equality stands at the foundation of human rights.
The member organisations of the Consortium aim to direct their own efforts as well as of the whole society to promote the concept of gender equality in all areas, which will directly contribute to implementing the National Plan on Gender Promotion for 2006-2009 and the National Plan of Actions in the field of human rights for 2004-2008.
To achieve its main goals, the Consortium will elect twice a year a member organisation to act as a Coordination Unit. At present this position is held by the Media Impact Agency.
The Media Consortium for Gender Equality was created within the framework of UNIFEM Moldova’s programme “Promoting Gender Equality in National Policies and Development Plans”. The programme is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Child.
