15 community mediators for Roma localities will be hired in 2013

In 2013, the Government will hire 15 community mediators for localities with predominant Rroma population. Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Valentina Buliga said that the employment of community mediators is a successful practice used in many European countries and recommended by the European Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The main areas of intervention of community mediators focus on ensuring the access of Rroma people to education, healthcare, social work and employment services, or any other services that facilitate the efficient inclusion of Roma communities in society”, said Valentina Buliga during the Government meeting. The main job of the community mediator is to inform the Roma people about existing opportunities and to provide individualized assistance to the Roma on community level. The state budget for 2013 allots 462,600 lei in this regard, which allows the employment of 15 community mediators, although there are 47 localities that need such workers. In 25 localities, there are mediators financed by UNDP Moldova. In the context of the examination of these changes and amendments to legislative acts in effect, the Prime Minister presented his new counselor that will handle this field, Ruslan Stanga.
