14th volume of encyclopedia “Settlements of the Republic of Moldova” launched

The 14th volume of the encyclopedia “Settlements of the Republic of Moldova”, which was produced by the team of the Foundation “Draghistea”, became available. The book, which is presented as an illustrated documentary-publicistic itinerary, covers the settlements whose name starts with To-Va, IPN reports.

For over 15 years, the group of scientists, writers and publicists had collected materials about the history of villages from archives and old books. A number of 14 volumes appeared until now. These describe the history and development of over 1,600 towns, communes and villages, in alphabetical order. The essays about settlements are documentary-publicistic in character and contain historical, demographic, administrative, cultural and toponymic information.

One of the project authors Victor Ladaniuc said each text is accompanied by a statistical note about the presented settlement. It is also indicated the geographical position and the first documentary attestation of the settlement. There are presented the lists of those who died in World War II, in the war in Afghanistan and in the Nistru armed conflict as well as the lists of victims of Stalinist repressions. It is also described the contemporary aspect of the settlement and famous personalities who were born there.

Attending the launch, Moldova’s first President Mircea Snegur said the 14th volume is a new victory in the case study of the Moldovan settlements, which is very important for the current and, especially, the future generations. Mircea Snegur took part in the event as a protagonist too as the book contains the history of his native village Trifanesti, of Floresti district. The ex-President expressed his admiration for the team of authors, saying this project was implemented in difficult conditions and with few financial resources.

Director of the Municipal Library “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” Mariana Harjevski said a dictionary is always an excellent instrument for enriching one’s knowledge. She voiced hope that this volume will be used by all those who want to learn about Moldova’s settlements.

According to the authors of the encyclopedia “Settlements of the Republic of Moldova”, the last, 15th volume is now being compiled. This is planned to be launched in the first half of 2017.
