The Gagauz Election Commission has so far registered 147 candidates running for seats in the autonomy's legislative body in elections scheduled for September 9. Of them, 74 candidates are fielded by political parties and 73 are unaffiliated. Election Commission president Svetlana Mironova has told Info-Prim Neo that at least two candidates registered for each of the 35 electoral precincts. The most numerous group of candidates was fielded by the Communist Party – 24 candidates, followed by the Liberal-Democratic Party – 21, the Socialist Party – 14, the Social-Democratic Party – 8, the Democratic Party – 4, and the Liberal Party – 2. The People's Socialist Party closes the list with one candidate. The applications of 4 other candidates are still being processed. Registration started on July 9 and remains open until August 9, 5:00pm. The costs of the poll are estimated at roughly 1.7 million lei, but no money has been allocated so far. The ballot papers will be printed in three languages: Romanian, Russian and Gagauz. 62 polling stations will be opened across Gagauzia. On September 9 Gagauzia will elect 35 deputies to the People's Assemble for a term of four years. Parties and other political organizations may field only one candidate for each of the 35 electoral precincts. Runoffs will be held in those precincts where no candidate will earn absolute majority.
