14 police officers and 13 protesters convicted after April 7 events

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) after the April 7, 2009 events started 173 criminal cases, 59 of which were sent to court. As many as 14 police officers and 13 protesters have been convicted so far, IPN has learned from the PGO.

A number of 102 criminal cases were opened against persons who took an active part in the public disorder. 31 of them were sent to court. The investigations into 68 cases involving 178 persons were closed, including because the defendants reached amicable agreements with the state representatives. 18 sentences were passed over mass disorder and thefts. 13 persons were convicted, one person was acquitted, while nine cases involving 13 people were closed.

The prosecutors are also investigating offenses committed by representatives of the public authorities against protesters and other persons after the April 2009. Criminal cases were started over 71 complaints concerning misuse of power, use of torture, etc. At the request of the prosecutors, 14 employees of the Ministry of the Interior were suspended from posts. Nine employees continue to be suspended at present.

The courts sentenced 14 police officers and acquitted another 20. The criminal case against a policeman was closed and the offender was punished administratively.

On April 7, it is four years since young people’s mass protests against the victory of the Communist Party in the April 5, 2009 elections. As a result of the revolts, the Parliament Building and the Presidential Office were devastated, and a person was killed.
