14 children killed in traffic accidents this year

From the beginning of the year 14 children have been killed and others 204 hurt in traffic accidents, and according to Traffic Police chief Sergiu Armasu, the situation is alarming. Speaking at a Friday event organized by the Investigative Journalism Center, Armasu said: “a major problem that we face are the poor driving skills of the young drivers, especially those with less than five years experience behind the wheel”. He added that traffic accidents lead to an estimated loss of 2% of GDP. In light of accidents involving children, negotiations are being held to toughen penalties for speeding and driving under the influence. Other common accidents involving children include drownings and poisonings, which are in fact the two leading lines in medical statistics related to children's accidents. In 2012, there were registered 122 children who got poisoned, 49% of them being aged from 6 months to 1 year.
