As many as 131 transplant operations were performed last year with mandatory health insurance funds, by 35 more than last year. The COVID-19 pandemic affected the structure of the performed transplants. While the number of liver and kidney transplants decreased, the number of cornea transplants increased, IPN reports.
According to the National Health Insurance Company, of the total number of transplants, two were liver transplants, three were kidney transplants, while 126 were cornea transplants. Over 5 million lei was allocated from the mandatory health insurance funds for these surgeries.
A sum of 7.3 million lei was planned in 2021 for transplants. A liver transplant costs about 790,000 lei, a kidney transplant – over 180,000 lei, a cornea transplant (without the cost of cornea) – about 22,000 lei, while the cost of amniotic membrane transplant - about 18,000 lei.
