123 years of Mihai Eminescu’s death marked in Chisinau

Politicians, diplomats and people of culture laid flowers at Mihai Eminescu’s bust on the Classical Writers Alley in Chisinau, commemorating thus 123 years of the poet’s death, Info-Prim Neo reports. The politicians came to his bust in turn. Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said it is a historical day and a day when he is proud that such a personality existed in the national culture. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said this day is significant for the whole country. “We came to Mihai Eminescu’s bust not only to lay flowers, but also to render homage to a great bard,” he stated. He added that the declaration of January 15 as the Day of Culture is an important step taken by the authorities. The chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said that Mihai Eminescu’s poems remind him that we were born Romanians on the territory of ancient Dacia, stressing that when we speak about Eminescu we cannot have doubts as to who we are and what language we speak. Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, who came to lay flowers together with employees of the City Hall, said that on the days when Mihai Eminescu was born and died the people speak nicely about the poet, but do not implement the values promoted by him in the daily life. The event also involved Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau Marius Lazurca and writers. Mihai Eminescu died on June 15, 1889. After his death, writer Tudor Vianu said that without Eminescu we would be poorer. The cause of his death remains a mystery. There are suspicions that he was killed.
