12 schools in Chisinau suburbs do not have sanitary facilities inside

The students of 12 schools of Chisinau municipality do not have sanitary facilities inside the education institutions. Head of the Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb has told IPN that the absence of sanitary facilities in schools is an old problem, dating from the time when the pre-university education institutions were administered by the local mayor’s offices of the first level.

“Unfortunately, steps were taken in only some of the schools owing to the difficult financial situation. On January 1, 2013, these education institutions were transferred under the management of the municipality, but the allocations from the budget remained at the same level. Not much money is invested as there are many other problems. Therefore, the situation of many schools remained unchanged,” stated Tatiana Tverdohleb.

She also said that a lot in such a situation depends on the initiative of school managers. For example, the principal of the lyceum of Truseni commune managed to obtain financing for building sanitary blocks inside the school and the interconnected sewerage system within a project. With financing from the municipality, such facilities will be also built at the school in Budesti commune.

Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb said calculations haven’t been yet done to determine the amount of money needed to build sanitary facilities inside schools, but the problem in the suburbs of Chisinau is mainly related to the lack of sewerage systems to which to connect the schools.
