On most of the roads in the Republic of Moldova, the speed limit allowed in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulations is 90 km/h. However, some of the sections of international roads can be classed as highways for which the legal speed limit is 110 km/h. “After the international road R1 (Chisinau – Sculeni) is made available for use, if road sections where the speed limit can be raised to 110 km/h are identified, such a decision can be taken if all the safety requirements are met,” Petru Spînu, division head at the National Public Safety Inspectorate, stated for IPN.
“If there are no turning places and road safety can be fully ensured, such a solution can be implemented. But it must be coordinated with the road administrator. All the travel restrictions and rules are agreed with the road administrators. On international roads, the State Road Administration (managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, e.n.) is the administrator, while the National Public Safety Inspectorate is the coordinator,” stated Petru Spînu. The two state institutions have the right to make changes to the travel regime on particular road sections.
In 2017, it was proposed classing as highway a 6-km section of the Chisinau – Soroca R6 1 road, between the villages Gornoe and Peresecina of Orhei district, but the project wasn’t implemented as the road section didn’t meet all the conditions for allowing the speed limit of 110 km/h on it.
To permit a 110 km/h speed limit on a road section, the roadway should be repaired, there should be all the necessary road signs and markings and at least two lanes for each direction delimited by a rigid parapet and there should be no intersections.
