11 years in jail for author of Straseni armed bank robbery

A 24-year-old man who last autumn robbed a bank in Straseni town, seriously wounding the guard, was sentenced to 11 years in jail, IPN reports, with reference to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The crime was committed in the evening of November 25, 2016. The young man shot at the bank’s guard from a traumatic pistol and then hit him with a metal bar. Later, threatening the cashier with the gun, he stole 20,000 lei and the guard’s firearm. The 69-year-old man lost his sight as a result of the injuries he suffered.

The robber was arrested in three days of the commission of the crime and was held on remand. He pleads not guilty. The court also obliged the culprit to cover the damage caused to the bank and to pay 115,000 lei in respect of pecuniary and non-pecuniary damage to the guard and 6,000 lei damages to the cashier. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
