105 broadcasters to cover election campaign

Ninety Moldovan broadcasters were authorized by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) to cover the election campaign. Another 15 applications are being examined. If these are accepted, the elections will be covered by 105 broadcasters, 60 of which are TV channels, while 45 are radio stations, IPN reports.

In an information seminar intended for broadcasters, BCC chairman Dinu Ciocan said the experience in covering the elections by broadcasters shows that deviations from norms are often committed. “Regretfully, those who cover the election campaign objectively, equidistantly and impartially are not many in number. That’s why we must make effort for the interests of the voters to prevail over other interests in this year’s election campaign that is very important for us, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” he stated.

Head of the Central Election Commission’s Communication Division Rodica Sarbu said the broadcasters do not have clear benchmarks to differentiate between election period and election campaign and thus meet with difficulties in covering the activities of potential election runners. Political propaganda in the election period is not banned, while electoral propaganda can start on September 30 this year and not earlier.
