A man from Stefan Voda district faces up to six years’ imprisonment for influence peddling. This is suspected of asking for €10,000 for helping obtain Romanian nationality in a short period of time, IPN has learned from the National Anticorruption Center.
According to the denouncer, the man, together with an intermediary, said they have influence over employees of the National Citizenship Authority of Romania. They promised to collect the necessary documents in exchange for €10,000, even if the applicant for nationality didn’t meet the conditions, and to later help him obtain the Romanian passport in a short period of time.
Following special investigation measures, the man was caught red-handed in a shopping center in Chisinau. As a result of bodily searches, the first tranche of €1,000 transmitted under the control of anticorruption officers was yielded up voluntarily. The man was placed under arrest for 72 hours initially.
If he is found guilty, the man will be jailed for a maximum of six years or will be fined up to 200,000 lei.
