10% of historical monuments demolished during last 17 years

Drawbacks in legislation, illegally constructing buildings and the movement of the transport – all lead to the destruction of Chisinau's historical heritage. Such statements weer made on Friday, May 16, by participants in a municipal conference on Chisinau's historical center, Info-Prim Neo reports. Viorel Miron, an expert of the project „Hist Urban”, mentioned statistics to say that from 1994 to 2007, because of faulty legislation, 96 historical edifices were demolished in the country, about 10 per cent of the total, their majority being in Chisinau. The issue can gradually be solved if the civil society understood the need to revitalize the historic heritage. It is necessary to develop some frame conditions to start rehabilitating the capital's historical center, Viorel Miron says. Chisinau's deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu says investments are needed to revitalize the city, as Chisinau is a city with the most historical monuments, about 900. Other experts suggest to create a revitalizing municipal cultural fund to finance projects in this respect, to compile registries and to ban “urban experiences” for a while. The city of Chisinau has granted the status of a historical city by the Culture Ministry in 1986.
