The extraordinary meeting of the Supreme Council of Magistracy (SCM) arranged for April 30 was postponed because the quorum was not present. The SCM members appointed by Parliament and the ex-officio members – minister of justice and prosecutor general – were absent, IPN reports.
Acting president of the SCM Luiza Gafton said members Carolina Ciugureanu-Mihailuță, Elena Belei, Valentina Coptileț and Ion Crețu informed her or the Council’s secretary about the impossibility of attending the meeting for personal, health or technical reasons. She noted she possesses no information about the absence of Minister of Justice Fadei Nagachevski and Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo.
SCM member Dorel Musteață said that to avoid absences, the meetings should be held on each Tuesday starting at 9am, as earlier. “I want to warn our colleagues from civil society that they get salaries for the work they do on the Council and the nonattendance of meetings generates questions,” he noted
Member Nina Cernat said she considers the absence of the civil society members from the meeting is not accidental. The activity of the SCM is to be discussed with representatives of the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission on May 6 and everyone should be present then.
The agenda of the April 30 meeting consisted of 14 items, including the request of the PPPDA leader Andrei Năstase to bring disciplinary proceedings against Constitutional Court judge Vladimir Țurcan.
